1940s High Street

1940s High Street

The Allied forces are much in evidence on this wartime high street. While Flying Fortresses pass overhead, a GI with a girl on his arm and two RAF pilots in a 1935 MG PB Midget enjoy a spot of leave. In the distance we see a Morris Commercial belonging to the British Army and a US Army Jeep. The Royal Navy is represented at the cinema where Noel Coward's "In Which We Serve" is showing. To save petrol, the bus is powered by gas from the trailer towed behind.

Print dimensions

18cm x 24cm (approximately 7" x 91/2") plus a caption.

This print is part of the Passage of Time series - a set of four fascinating pictures depicting a typical British high street over four decades, from the 1930s to the 60s. It's not only the vehicles and costumes that changes with the Passage of Time, but the posters outside the cinema and newsagents illustrate the popular films and headlines of each period.
